On the Farm This Month:
Andy and I were introduced to the idea of regenerative farming by Sam Lang, a young farmer and Nuffield scholar whom we met at the market last year. He came home to the farm and enthusiastically dug holes and talked non stop. He inspired us with his stories of the farmers he had worked with all over the world whose focus was to leave their farm environment and particularly their soils in better shape every year. Since then we have been on a learning journey, building on Mum and Dad’s foundation, refining management practices that restore the biological and fungal life in the soil, improve water holding capacity, reduce nitrate run-off, and improve animal health. We are learning it is not about prescriptive practices but about adapting to our unique environment with some key goals in the forefront. Keep living roots in the soil, keep the ground covered, optimise plant photosynthesis and build plant diversity . Some days we get it wrong but we keep our eyes and ears open and are excited about the potentials before us.
